before ordering anything from this website.

Please read through all the sections below for details on how to order your very own animal portrait. Use this form to send your commission enquiry to me. Alternatively, use the contact page.

What materials do you use to draw portraits?

You can commission me to create you a unique, original portrait from photographs of your favourite animal or pet in either coloured pencils or sketching pencils. I use the top of the range Caran d'Ache Luminance 6901 coloured pencils for my drawings in colour, and Derwent graphite pencils for my black-and-white sketches. I recommend for black-and-white pets, to go for a sketch, whilst pets with many colours to go for a coloured portrait.

What should my photo be like?

For a commission I will need at least one high quality, digital photo of the subject. This should be sent attached to an e-mail, or can be printed and sent in the post if you are unable to scan and upload your photo (please make sure that the photo is your own and copyright free).

For me to be able to draw your animal's portrait accurately, your photo will need good lighting and not be blurred. It should also consist mainly of the animal's head and shoulders (it does not need to be a full body shot for a portrait, I can crop it). Please make sure your photo also shows the animal's true colours, and try to use one that measures at least 1500 x 2000 pixels for best results.

Below is an example of a good quality photo. It has good lighting, shows the cat well and is a large enough size for me to crop.

What portrait sizes can I choose from?

You can choose from either A4 (21 x 29.7 cm), A3 (29.7 x 42 cm) or A2 (42 x 59.4 cm), though I would recommend that A3 is usually the best size for a pet portrait. All portraits are drawn on off-white, 220 gsm heavyweight paper.

For one pet, I recommend either an A4 or A3 sized portrait. For multiple pets, I recommend either A3 or A2.

The pet portrait process from start to finish...

After deciding on a suitable photo, size and medium, I will get to work on your portrait. At times I may have several commissions on the go at once (Christmas is always very busy, please order commissions in advance) which I will inform you of if time is an issue. At various stages throughout the drawing I will photograph it and e-mail the image to you so that you may ask for alterations and see how it's progressing. Once completed, a method of payment can be sorted out over e-mail, phone or in person. Unfortunately I cannot drive, so delivery of the portrait will depend on postage or pick-up. Postage and packaging rates apply on top of the prices stated above; price will depend on the size of the artwork and your location within the UK.

Will it be framed?

The finished portrait will be given to you unframed. I believe it's best to choose the right frame for yourself. I always leave a small, white border around the edge of my artwork, which will be covered up when the picture is framed.
